I got an email last Monday that seemed far too good to be true – I’d won a competition. But on this occasion it’s turned out to be true!
Each week in the magazine section of the Saturday Guardian newspaper there is a photography competition. A theme is given and readers can email in a picture that they think fits the theme, along with a couple of words.
I’ve entered a couple of times, themes such as ‘weddings’ and ‘gardens’; but never heard anything.
So when an email arrived that told me that I’d won I was very excited! I was in Morrison’s with Emma when I got it and could be seen jumping up and down in the aisle!! I was so excited at the thought of having one of my photos in the paper that it passed me by that I’d actually won a prize as well.
The winner each week gets a Nixon Coolpix P5000 camera – a point and shoot which has megapixel picture quality than my SLR! – although obviously my SLR still gives me better control.
When I sent the picture I didn’t have much hope as it was only a very tenuous link to the theme of ‘uniforms’. Although the houses are ‘uniform’, that wasn’t the theme – and the runners up prove that they were thinking more of clothes. I think that the words I wrote probably made the difference –
“The brick terraces in Sheffield appear like uniforms worn by homes across the city”
I’m so chuffed, a number of people have suggested that I frame a copy of the page, and I’ve had some lovely Flickrmails and text messages from friends and Flickr folk. I’d alerted the Sheffield group to look out for it so there have been some nice words on the discussion thread too.
As we were at Cropredy on Saturday I wasn’t sure about getting a copy of the paper so asked Colin to get me a couple. When we walked into the village to try and get a copy at the local Spar but by the time we got there the only papers they had were the red top rags.
I began to threaten mugging someone if we saw them with a copy! However, as we walked passed a wall a little later there was a copy on the top. I hope that the owner had finished with it, and hadn’t just left it there whilst they had breakfast or something! Anyway, my need was greater!
